9.1 3ality Brings Stereo 3D That's Sharp & Comfortable

3ality's latest breakthrough is the world's first flat-panel 3D display with full native resolution, no special eyewear, and no flicker. Unlike what is commonly referred to as "3D", stereo 3D images appear suspended in front of the screen or deep inside it. Applications range from manufacturing to military, from medical (e.g., minimally invasive surgery) to oil exploration, from drug design to entertainment. At 3ality's R&D center in Jerusalem, scientists have figured out how to combine left and right images onto a single screen and then re-divide them for display. It's all done using ordinary LCD technology and 3ality's own proprietary software. Instead of special glasses, the display tracks your eyes so it can aim the left and right images at them. Move your head and you can actually look around the object to see it from the side. Also in development at 3ality is a full-time, single-projector, stereo 3D projection system (existing 3D theaters, such as those at iMax and Disneyland, require two projectors). 3ality has developed prototypes together with the US Army, which is interested in 3D displays for remote tele-operations. The displays are expected to reach the market by 2005. 3ality (www.3ality.com), with R&D headquarters in Jerusalem, Israel, specializes in creating innovative 3D solutions.
